Contests For Kids 2008

Contests can be a fun way for kids to learn and win prizes at the same time! This is where I will post contests for kids that I find online, and will update this post when I find more. I posted a couple contests in Nov or Oct and if I repeat something fogive me, a lot of people don't look in the archives. Note- I will let you know if a contest is regional or requires an entry fee.

Amazing Kids!- This website hosts contests and also lists off site contests.

Kid's Turn Central- You can enter sweepstakes and find contests on this site. Currently they are giving away Veggie Tales DVD and Neopets Plushies.

Youth Wildlife Art Contest- This contest is hosted by the National Rifle Association. If your child has an interest in hunting or wildlife this one is good. This is not an active contest right now, it looks like it begins with the new school year. So bookmark this one and check back in the summer of 2008.

2008 Arbor Day National Poster Contest- For fifth grade students, contest is open now for entries. This is a school contest, and homeschools qualify.

RIF Reading Planet- Features multiple contests throughout the year.

Baltimore Science Fiction Society- (Maryland only) Ages 14-18 Young writer's contest. Entry date is March 28, 2008. This is a yearly contest.

Kids in Print Book Contest- ($10 entry fee) Kids write and illustrate their own book to enter the contest. Ages 6-19 with several age group divisions. Deadline is June 1, 2008

Crazy 4 Math Contest- Kids, share your creative math ideas! Describe how you use math in any activity you love to do — a sport, game, craft, hobby, or anything else.

Botball- A robotics competition. You will want to bookmark this one if your child is interested in robotics, it seems like a neat competition. There is a steep entry fee, which apparently covers the materials needed. They do have a scholarship/assistance program to help. This is a team competition, and a regional competition. Several U.S. states as well as several middle eastern countries can participate.

Robofest- Robotics competition. Registration will begin soon for 2008. This is a team competition.

Dream Quest One Writing and Poetry Contest- (Entry fee $10. for stories and $5. for poems) You can enter either a story or poem, and this is a contest for everyone, not just kids. Prizes range from $50. to $500. and the deadline is July 31, 2008.

National Dress Up Your Pet Day Contest- This contest is over, but this website appears to be hosting multiple contests. You may want to still check it out. [updated 3/13/08]

State Fish Art Expo- Draw or paint your state fish in it's natural habitat. For grades 4-12. Deadline March 31, 2008

Neuroscience For Kids- Poetry contest for kids grades K-12. A fun contest! [This contest has ended. It is a yearly contest, so check back next Jan.]

The Grannie Annie- Ages 9-14, International. Kids write a story from the past generation of your family. Deadline Febuary 14, 2008. [This contest has ended for this year. Check back next year.]

Save the Children Art Contest- Open to children under 18, judging in April and October each year. Deadline Dec.31 2008 (yearly contest)

River of Words- Free international poetry and art contest for kids on the subject of watersheds. Ages 5-19 (older kids must still be in high school) and Deadlines are Febuary 15 for USA and March 1 for everyone else. [This contest is over, but is a yearly contest. Check back next year.]

Ranger Rick Photo Contest- Ongoing contest, winners selected every 3 months. Age 13 and under may enter.

"Animal Rescue" Kids Art Contest- Kids 16 and under send in pictures of their favorite animals. Monthly ongoing contest, winner gets a T-Shirt.

Kid's Craft Contest- For kids ages 4-9. Prize is a $20. gift certificate to "Toys to Wish For". Deadline May 31, 2008

International Art and Story Contest- Please, draw a picture or a map or tell a story how you can get to where your hero lives. Unsure of ages or deadline.

Highlights Fiction Contest- Must be at least 16 years old to enter. Deadline January 31, 2008 [Yearly contest. Check back next year.]

Reading Rainbow- Annual Young Writers and Illustrators Contest open to grades K-3. Deadline for independent entries is March 28, 2008.

National Missing Children's Day Poster Contest- Entrants must be in Fifth grade. Visit the site for information, there is too much to list here.

The Betty Award Writing Contest- ($15. Entry fee) Open to children ages 8-12 internationally. Deadline May 15, 2008

Kids Philosophy Slam-($25 fee for schools and $2 fee for homeschools) Create art about this years topic. Each grade group has different choices for what kind of art to submit. Deadline Febuary 1, 2008 [I believe this is a yearly contest. Check back next year.]
